30 Years of Moving Forward: Celebrating McClain’s Pearl Anniversary

January 19, 2025

McClains FrontIn the fast-paced world of logistics, longevity is a rare achievement. It requires more than just trucks and warehouses; it demands resilience, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to people. As 2025 arrives, McClain & Associates Logistics & Warehousing celebrates a monumental milestone: our 30th Anniversary.

Three decades ago, the landscape of supply chain management looked vastly different. The internet was in its infancy, digitalization was a distant dream for many, and the term “3PL” was just gaining traction. Yet, in 1995, Mike and Kelly McClain saw an opportunity to build something lasting in St. Louis. What began as a local venture managing warehousing facilities has blossomed into a premier, technology-driven third-party logistics provider with a nationwide footprint.

As we look back on 30 years of history, we aren’t just celebrating the passage of time. We are celebrating the partnerships, the innovations, and the bold decisions that have brought us to this moment.

The Foundation: Built on Trust (1995–1999)

Every great journey begins with a first step. For us, that step was taken in 1995 when Mike and Kelly McClain founded the company. The mission was simple but powerful: help clients reduce costs while enhancing supply chain efficiency. In those early years, our focus was strictly on warehousing assets across St. Louis. We learned the industry from the ground up—literally from the warehouse floor—understanding the physical realities of storage, handling, and movement.

By 1999, the vision had expanded. Recognizing the growing complexity of our clients’ needs, McClain evolved into a multimodal supply chain provider, officially launching as a third-party logistics (3PL) firm. This pivot was crucial. It allowed us to serve the growing St. Louis economy not just as a place to store goods, but as a strategic partner in moving them.

Generational Growth and Innovation (2004–2021)

A defining characteristic of McClain is that we are family-owned and values-driven. In 2004, the next generation stepped forward when Dan McClain joined the team. With a fresh perspective and a focus on sales and technology, Dan helped lay the groundwork for a long-term innovation strategy that would differentiate us from competitors.

This era was marked by physical and operational expansion. We moved operations to Earth City in 2009 to unify our team, and then to the Gundaker building on Dorsett Road in 2014 to accommodate our growing workforce.

But perhaps the most significant shift was our embrace of technology. In 2012, long before “digital transformation” was a buzzword, we partnered with CarrierStore to build a proprietary, cloud-based Transportation Management System (TMS) on the Salesforce platform. This wasn’t just an IT upgrade; it was a commitment to transparency, enabling real-time collaboration with our customers.

In 2021, the torch was officially passed. Dan McClain purchased the company from Mike and Kelly, becoming President. This leadership transformation honored our roots while aggressively steering us toward a modern, tech-centric future.

A Milestone Year: The New Maryland Heights HQ Coming in 2025

future warehouse for McClainThere is no better way to celebrate a 30th anniversary than by opening a new chapter—quite literally. Coinciding with our pearl anniversary, McClain is proud to unveil our new headquarters in Maryland Heights.

This isn’t just an office; it is a 30,000-square-foot engine for growth. By consolidating our logistics teams with a warehouse facility equipped with dock doors and a rail line, we are bridging the gap between digital logistics and physical handling. This new space unlocks a suite of expanded services for our clients, including internal transloading, cross-docking, consolidation, and short-term storage.

Moving into this facility in 2025 symbolizes everything we have worked for: a perfect blend of our warehousing heritage and our modern logistics capabilities, all under one roof.

The Philosophy of True Partnership

While buildings and software are impressive, our 30-year survival is owed to something intangible: our culture. We describe ourselves as being “Built on the Foundation of True Partnership.”

In an industry often commoditized by low rates and transactional relationships, we chose a different path. We chose to be available 24/7. We chose to dive deep into our clients’ specific industries. We chose to treat our carriers with the same respect as our shippers. This service-first model has allowed us to endure through economic downturns, global pandemics, and industry upheavals. When the world stopped, logistics kept moving, and McClain was there for our partners every step of the way.

The Road Ahead

Our vision for the next chapter is clear. We plan to continue expanding our warehousing, reworking, and final-mile services. We will double down on our technology investments, building on the success of our 2023 next-gen TMS partnership to provide even greater data visibility and API integrations.

To our clients, carriers, and employees who have been part of this 30-year journey: Thank you. You are the fuel in our tank.

Here is to the past 30 years of hard work, and to the next 30 years of innovation. The future of freight is bright, and it is tailored for you.
